One of the toughest challenges you can face when caring for the disabled or elderly is resistance to care. How do you help a loved one who doesn’t want help or one that resists help? Understand why resistance to care might develop and strategies for fostering cooperation when caring for the elderly.
If your family is considering long term care options for an ageing parent or other loved one, start the discussions early. If you wait too long, an illness or injury may force a hasty decision that everyone may later regret. Start by helping your loved one compare various options to help keep them independent as possible such as personal care assistant before making the decision to place them inside a facility for skilled service needs. If your loved one doesn’t respond well to your efforts to talk about long term care, don’t give up. Consider involving a trusted clergy member, doctor or attorney or someone they trust.
